Sister Cities- Brecon, Wales and Lindenberg, Germany

The City of Saline has been Sister City with Brecon Wales since 1966. In 1989 volunteers of the community joined together to establish the Saline-Brecon Friendship Guild Ltd. with the mission of promoting our sister city relationship to the Saline community and to provide a focus for the necessary fund-raising activities needed to continue and expand our 25-year association and friendship with Brecon, Wales. On October 12, 2003, 54 guests from Lindenberg, Germany were greeted by Saline Citizens at the Saline American Legion Hall welcoming them to the City of Saline. All 54 guests were hosted by Saline Area citizens for their one week stay.
On October 13th, at a Special City Council Meeting, Saline Mayor, Gretchen Driskell and Johann Zeh, Mayor of Lindenberg, Germany signed the official Sister City Agreement, promoting friendship and cooperation between the two cities. Over 100 citizens crowded the Council Chambers at City Hall to meet and greet our Lindenberg guests. Guest speakers were Nick Smith, U.S. Representative in Congress, Beverly Hammerstrom, State Senator, David Allen, Representing U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Cindy Janecke, Representing Governor Jennifer Granholm and Robert Bykowski, Representing State Representative Gene DeRossett.
Over the course of the visit, guests were treated to tours of Saline and Ann Arbor. Highlights of the Saline tour included stops at Harvest Elementary School, Saline High School, the Bixby Marionette Museum, the Depot Museum, Liebherr, the Rentschler Farm and Trinity Lutheran Church. Places of interest in Ann Arbor were Michigan Stadium and the University of Michigan. Guests also had an opportunity to visit Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum.
An Octoberfest was held Friday, October 17th at the Tri-County Sportsman Club. The event was open to the public and was sold out, hosting over 200 people. Entertainment included the Saline Fiddlers and the Luther Schaible band.
October 13, 2003 marked the beginning of a new Sister City relationship, the start of many memories and new friendships with Lindenberg, Germany.
