The Department of Water Production and Wastewater Treatment is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, five well pumps, two water storage towers and seven sewage lift stations.
Water Treatment Plant
The City’s WTP began operation in May of 2005. The plant removes iron and manganese through the use of greensand filters. Hardness is removed using reverse osmosis membranes. The plant has a daily maximum output capacity of 3.5 million gallons per day and produces on average 1.2 million gallons per day. Routine water testing is performed daily and monitoring for contaminants is done on a regular basis to insure the quality of our water. The City’s Annual Water Quality Report is available here.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Wastewater Plant treats an average of 1 million gallons of wastewater per day. Treatment is accomplished through a combination of biological, chemical and physical processes. Rotating Biological Contactors, settling tanks, ferric chloride and chlorine addition are some of the treatment processes used. Our water is tested every day for several pollutants and is discharged to the Saline River. Limitations are established in our discharge permit, which is issued by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
