City to Conduct Street Tree Inventory

The City of Saline was awarded a $20,000 matching Urban and Community Forestry Grant from the State of Michigan. The Davey Resource Group was awarded the contract to perform a Tree Inventory, provide an Urban Forestry Management Plan, and provide Tree Management software.

The tree inventory project is critical as the information collected will assist the City of Saline’s staff in its ability to efficiently locate existing trees and vacant planting sites, prioritize tree maintenance tasks, and identify, assess, and correct storm damaged trees. The tree inventory data collection will be performed by Urban Foresters and/or Certified Arborists for the GIS-Based Street computerized tree inventory. The inventory provides information on the type and size of tree, condition, location, maintenance needs, clearance requirements, hardscape damage, above ground utilities, grow space size, and other notes or observations. The Davey Resource Group plans to begin the inventory on Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Urban Foresters will be roaming the subdivisions physically inspecting each tree in the Right of Way. They will carry City issued ID cards.

After all of the trees are inventoried and placed on the GIS-based tree management system, City staff will be trained on how to maintain the inventory.

For the final part of the project, Davey Resource Group will provide an Urban Forest Management Plan. The Urban Forest Management Plan will be an action plan for urban forest maintenance based on an analysis of tree inventory data. Included in the management plan are inventory reports and an analysis of the current tree population, growing environment, and maintenance needs, as well as long-range management recommendations.
